Hello, I Am Amelie
When I finished my A-Levels I thought I would go to university as that had always been the narrative. I attended University for 1 year and studied Mathematics which I enjoyed but knew I wanted to kickstart my career earlier. So, after looking into various apprenticeship opportunities, I decided to take the leap and apply. I’m so happy I did! An apprenticeship is a fantastic way to gain valuable work experience whilst learning and more often than not, a job lined up for you after you qualify.
Tell us more about your experience
I am an Associate Project Manager at AQA based in Manchester. I work alongside colleagues from across the business to help make strategic changes that benefit AQA customers. On a day-to-day basis I can often be found in meetings with the team where we discuss the progress of the project and any updates that we have.
The highlight of my career so far has been networking with colleagues from across the business. I have been to many team days and roadshows, and I always enjoy getting to know new people and understanding a bit more about their role at AQA.
It feels like everyone is on the same level and I have even had the opportunity to meet with the CEO and Executive Team.
The biggest challenge in my career so far was when I was new to the role and was introduced to my first project. I started my Project Management career with no prior knowledge so at first, I did feel a bit out of my depth.
I have come to realise that every new starter feels like this and if you get stuck in and ask lots of questions you will be fine.
Everyone at my company is so friendly and supportive I feel like I can talk to anyone! Within my team I have a Buddy who I work with on a day-to-day basis, she helps with any job specific questions I have, and I often work alongside her on projects. I then also have my Line manager who is lovely, and we have weekly catch-up sessions to make sure my apprenticeship experience is going ok. My training provider is also really supportive, and I go to them for any questions I have about my qualification.
At the end of my apprenticeship, I hope to stay on at AQA as a Project Manager. I have also had discussions with my Line Manager about further fully funded qualifications I can sit which will be great for my career progression.
I’m excited to see where my career will take me and know that my apprenticeship will provide me with lots of exciting opportunities.
My advice to someone thinking about doing an apprenticeship would be to investigate the different employers and industries and make sure it is something you like the look of. The job you choose for your apprenticeship doesn’t have to be your job for life. I know so many people who have changed career paths so don’t let not being 100% certain of your career put you off from applying. The only way you will know exactly what you want to do is through experience.
