Intermediate apprenticeships (Level 2)
An intermediate apprenticeship is the most common way into work straight after GCSEs. You're a paid employee from day one, learning the job by doing it, with time set aside each week for study towards a recognised qualification.
What you get
- Paid from your first day, with holiday and the same rights as any employee
- Equivalent to five GCSEs at grades 9–4 (A*–C)
- No tuition fees — your employer and the government fund the training
- Progress straight onto an advanced (Level 3) apprenticeship afterwards
Who it's for
School leavers, career changers, and anyone who'd rather earn while they learn than carry on in full-time education.
Common questions
Do I get paid on an intermediate apprenticeship?
Yes. Apprentices are employees and must be paid at least the apprentice National Minimum Wage, though many employers pay considerably more. You also get holiday, sick pay and a contract like any other employee.
What qualifications do I need?
Often none at all. Some employers ask for GCSEs in English and maths, but plenty will let you work towards those alongside the apprenticeship if you don't have them yet.
What can I do afterwards?
Most people move up to an advanced (Level 3) apprenticeship or into a permanent role with the same employer. Apprenticeships ladder all the way to degree level.
