An internship is a structured placement, normally paid, lasting anywhere from a few weeks over summer to a full year in industry. Interns take on real responsibilities, and a large share of interns are offered permanent roles afterwards.

Should internships be paid?
If you're doing real work with set hours, you're generally entitled to at least the National Minimum Wage. Genuine short shadowing or voluntary placements are treated differently.

Very often. Many large employers use their internship programme as the main route into their graduate scheme.

Earlier than you'd think — competitive summer internships often close the previous autumn.
