Plumbing Apprenticeships

Have you considered a career in plumbing? Experience is vital so an apprenticeship might be the best thing for you.
As a plumbing apprentice, you’ll be planning, selecting, installing, servicing, commissioning and maintaining all aspects of plumbing and heating systems. This could be inside a building, outside the building, in a domestic home or on a commercial property.
A plumbing apprenticeship isn’t as easy as you might originally think, it’s a highly skilled profession. Not only do you need to know a lot about lots of different types of boiler makes, from recent to antique but also computer systems and new welding techniques. Plumbers with experience in all of these areas can expect to earn a great salary particularly if you get great relationships with your clients.
To be a plumber there are a number of things that you should be able to do. Here’s some things that you should be comfortable with.
- Working at a height
- Working with little supervision
- Travelling to customers
- Building relationships with clients
- Read building and engineering drawings
- Understand and select materials and equipment
- Inspect installations for damage
- Have responsibility to correctly diagnose faults
- Write reports
Some of these things may come naturally to you, like building relationships and working at heights but you’ll also be learning a lot of what you’ll be doing during your plumbing apprenticeship training. Some of the skills you’ll be learning include
HEALTH AND SAFETY – Learning about legislation and safe working
CORE PLUMBING SYSTEMS – Understanding all about plumbing systems
ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS AND CONTROL SYSTEMS – The installation and testing of systems
PLUMBING SCIENCE AND PROCESSES – Understanding the science behind plumbing
CUSTOMER SERVICE – Understand the needs of others you’ll be working with.
