Tell us more about your experience

I was doing GCSES when I first heard about apprenticeships. I considered applying for one, but decided to stay in college to do a Level 3 BTEC in IT for 1 year. However, I didn’t really get any good experience out of it as I didn’t learn the skills I wanted to, so I then started to apply to apprenticeships. I applied to over 20 or so apprenticeships but, unfortunately, got rejected from all of them. I then created a LinkedIn account and finally got a software developer apprentice at DXC where I am delivering services and solutions to million-dollar projects.

A highlight of the apprenticeship so far has been participating in over 90 events and sessions as part of National Apprenticeship Week at DXC. My biggest challenge so far is that I was a total beginner in coding, therefore learning all these concepts and techniques was overwhelming when I first started out.

If I was to give one word of advice to anyone thinking of doing an apprenticeship, it would be to do your research. You must do research on the company and the training providers. Once you get in be prepared, as working and studying can be difficult, but it’s all worth it in the end.
