I’ve always been a hands-on learner, so I discovered that I learn best by doing or watching someone else. This learning style makes an apprenticeship the perfect fit for me. Engineering involves a lot of problem-solving, and every day presents a new challenge, keeping my brain engaged. It’s a combination of creativity and logical thinking, which ties into many of my hobbies.

I spend my free time playing games with my friends, including a variety of board games, video games, and TTRPGs. I also enjoy sewing clothes, baking, and painting miniatures for my games. Additionally, I love making costumes and props for cosplay.

Q&A with Matilda
I am an Engineering Fitter, and my role involves building aerospace indicators. On-site, we handle both new builds and repairs, and I’m trained to complete both processes. When a repair comes in, I assess its condition, perform initial tests to diagnose faults, and follow process masters—our set of build instructions. I’m also involved in suggesting improvements from a production floor perspective.
Recently, I was part of a project to transfer one of our new build indicators to Vietnam. I helped welcome the Vietnamese team, trained them to build to a high standard, and kept their paperwork organised. It was a rewarding experience, and I learnt a lot about training others, especially those who don’t speak my language.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Working with different people and understanding that everyone has unique personalities has been a learning curve for me. However, I’ve developed strong communication skills and learned how to adapt my approach to different team dynamics.
What support do you have around you?
My support network includes my Team Leader, colleagues, Learning Development Coach, and fellow apprentices. I know that within the company, I can always find support wherever I need it.
What is your end goal?
My goal is to secure a permanent role within the company in an area I enjoy. I feel I’ve made a strong impression, and I’m confident that I’ve set myself up for future opportunities.
What advice would you give to future apprentices?
Listen to those offering help and learn from everyone around you. There are no stupid questions—asking questions is the best way to grow!
