Why construction?
The UK has a long-standing shortage of skilled trades, so qualified people are in consistent demand and self-employment is a realistic option later. Construction also pays comparatively well at apprentice level, and the qualifications are portable across the country.
Common questions
Do I need to be good at maths?
Some numeracy helps, particularly in surveying and engineering, but apprenticeships include the maths you need and you can work towards Functional Skills alongside.
Is construction only outdoor work?
No. Plenty of roles are workshop-based, and surveying, design and site management involve significant office work.
Can I be self-employed later?
Many qualified tradespeople do go self-employed once they have experience and their qualifications.
