Motorcycle Technician

Training apprentices to acquire all-round competence as a Motorcycle Technician (Repair and Maintenance) Level 3, using a blended learning approach through block release residential training, remote learning and self-study, and workplace access to learning opportunities.

Knowledge covered

  • Frame construction, welding and brazing methods
  • Steering setup, suspension systems and adjustment
  • Wheels, tyres and braking system specifications
  • Engine construction (two/four stroke, electric propulsion)
  • Cooling and lubrication systems
  • Intake, exhaust, emission, fuel and ignition systems
  • Transmission types (chain, belt, shaft drive, CVT)
  • Electrical systems and instrumentation
  • Service and maintenance to manufacturer specifications
  • Diagnostic and troubleshooting principles
  • Emerging technologies and legislation, including electric motorcycle developments

Competencies developed

  • Engineering tasks including cutting, drilling, filing, removing and replacing bolts
  • Health and safety knowledge and environmental awareness
  • Diagnostic methods and mechanical/electrical tools usage
  • Investigating symptoms of motorcycle faults
  • Accessing technical information including wiring diagrams, maintenance tables and safety recalls

Additional elements include Functional Skills English and Maths to a minimum of Level 2.

Duration

Expected to take 3 years for apprentices to attain the required level of competence.

Off-the-job training

A statutory requirement, with a minimum of 20% of the apprentice's employment hours, completed through guided workplace learning supplemented by face-to-face delivery at the training centre and digital learning opportunities.

End point assessment

Certification is awarded following successful achievement of an independent assessment, comprising an online knowledge assessment, an observed practical skills test, a synoptic professional discussion, and an apprentice showcase.
